Advanced Musculoskeletal Recovery
How Swedish and relaxing massage works at Optimove
Swedish massage is the classic relaxing massage. It uses long, flowing strokes, kneading and light to medium pressure to help your body and mind settle. It is less about working on one problem area and more about helping you switch off.
Calm and unhurried
Your therapist works at a steady, gentle pace, with long, flowing strokes, gentle kneading and rhythmic movements across the back, shoulders, arms and legs, or the areas you choose. Massage oils are typically used. Pressure stays light to moderate, and you can change it at any point.
Shaped around you
Tell your therapist how you are feeling, which areas hold tension and whether you would like quiet or conversation. The session is adapted to your preferences on the day.
When you want something more
If you decide you want firmer work on tight muscles, deep tissue massage is the natural next step, and sports massage is tailored to training. For a specific problem that keeps coming back, our physiotherapists also provide remedial massage. You can see every option on our massage treatments in Marylebone page.

Your experience
What to expect at your massage appointment
Arrive and settle
Arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in. Your therapist asks about your health and preferences, including any areas to avoid. You may be asked to undress to your comfort level. Towels are used to maintain your privacy, exposing only the area being treated.
Your treatment
The aim is a calm, comfortable session. If anything is too light, too firm or not quite right, say so and your therapist will adjust.
Afterwards
Rest if you need to, drink water as normal and enjoy gentle activity. Usually no recovery time is needed.
Who benefits
What relaxing massage can help with
It may help you:
- unwind after a demanding week
- ease everyday tension in the neck, shoulders and back
- feel more at ease when you have been under pressure at work
- make time to slow down
Massage can be one part of looking after your wellbeing, but it is not a treatment for any medical or mental health condition. If stress, low mood or poor sleep are affecting your daily life, the NHS Every Mind Matters site offers practical advice, and your GP can help if you are struggling to cope.
This treatment is for anyone who wants to relax: busy professionals around Marylebone, Fitzrovia and Mayfair, people coming out of a stressful period, and those who find firm massage too much. It is also a good first step if you have never had a massage before.
