Understanding Plantar Fasciitis

What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. It acts like a shock absorber and supports the arch of your foot, but too much stress can lead to tiny tears, irritation, and pain.
Shockwave therapy is one of the most effective treatments for chronic plantar fasciitis, with success rates of 80-90%. It works by stimulating tissue regeneration and reducing pain sensitivity in the plantar fascia.

Common Symptoms

  • Sharp heel pain, especially when taking your first steps in the morning
  • Stiffness in the foot after rest
  • Pain that worsens after prolonged standing, walking, or running
  • Discomfort when climbing stairs or after intense activity

Causes

  • Overuse and repetitive strain – common in runners, athletes, and people who stand for long hours.
  • Foot mechanics and posture – flat feet, high arches, or poor walking patterns can increase strain.
  • Obesity and lifestyle – excess body weight puts added pressure on the plantar fascia.
  • Injuries and trauma – sudden impact or repeated micro-injuries to the heel and arch

Treatment Options

  • Rest and footwear changes – reducing strain and using supportive shoes
  • Physiotherapy and stretching – targeted exercises to improve flexibility and strength
  • Manual therapy – hands-on techniques to relieve tightness and improve foot mechanics
  • Orthotics and supports – custom insoles to correct posture and reduce pressure on the heel
  • Injections – for persistent or severe cases, advanced treatments may be considered

Prevention

  • Footwear advice – wear supportive shoes with a wide toe-box and cushioned soles.
  • Strengthening and stretching – keep your calf muscles flexible, keep the arch supporting muscles strong.
  • Lifestyle adjustments – maintain a healthy weight, avoid overtraining, and incorporate regular foot care

Self-Care for Plantar Fasciitis

  • Rest and raise your foot on a stool when you can.
  • Wear shoes with cushioned heels and good arch support.
  • Try gently stretching your calf muscles for about 30 seconds, twice per day. Stop if this worsens the symptoms.
  • Swimming and/ or exercising in a swimming pool can be a good way to stay active.

At Optimove Clinic, we take a different approach compared to other clinics. While they tend to “chase the pain” by focusing solely on treating the actively painful area, we take a holistic approach to pain management. We understand that pain in one area may be linked to dysfunction in another part of the body. By addressing the root cause of the pain, rather than just the symptoms, we can provide more effective and long-lasting relief.

Our method incorporates different techniques such as Manual Therapy, Corrective/Therapeutic Exercise, and Pilates, to alleviate pain and enhance athletic performance. We strive to assist individuals in reducing or eliminating discomfort while also supporting athletes in optimizing their abilities.
