Understanding Hip & Groin Pain

What is hip and groin pain? Hip and groin pain refers to discomfort around the hip joint, pelvis, or upper thigh. Because of the close connection between the hip joint and surrounding muscles, pain is often felt in both the hip and groin area. It may come on suddenly after an injury or gradually due to long-term strain originating from mechanical reasons or degeneration.

Common symptoms

  • Stiffness in the hip or groin area
  • Reduced mobility – difficulty walking, squatting, or rotating the leg
  • Pain radiating into the thigh, buttock, or lower back
  • Clicking, catching, or instability in the hip joint

Causes

  • Arthritis and degeneration – wear and tear in the hip joint leading to stiffness and pain
  • Labral tears and joint injuries – damage to the cartilage around the hip joint
  • Sports injuries – strains from football, running, or high-impact sports
  • Postural and biomechanical issues – poor movement patterns or imbalances that overload the hip

Treatment Options

  • Physiotherapy and exercise therapy – structured programmes to build strength and restore movement
  • Manual therapy and mobilisation – hands-on treatment to reduce stiffness and improve joint function
  • Supportive aids – such as orthotics or braces, when needed, to reduce strain
  • Surgery when required – in cases of severe joint damage, we support patients through surgical pathways and post-operative rehab
  • For related issues, see our knee pain treatment page.

Prevention

  • Strength and flexibility training – keeping the muscles around the hips, core, and legs strong and supple
  • Correct movement patterns – addressing imbalances to improve movement efficiently, avoiding overload and injury
  • Lifestyle advice – weight management, activity modifications, and healthy exercise routines

Hip and groin pain can sometimes be confused with sciatica pain, as both can cause radiating discomfort down the leg.

Self Care for hip and groin pain

  • Try to continue with your daily activities as much as possible.
  • Exercise is an important cornerstone in both the prevention and treatment of shoulder pain but should be avoided for the first 48 to 72 hours. After this time frame, you could try some gentle exercises and gradually build up the intensity and volume over time. Avoid any exercise that seems to aggravate your symptoms.
  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, heat packs, massages and alcohol for the first 48 to 72 hours to control the inflammatory process and avoid swelling. After this time frame, heat could be helpful as it can promote healing.

At Optimove Clinic, we take a different approach compared to other clinics. While they tend to “chase the pain” by focusing solely on treating the actively painful area, we take a holistic approach to pain management. We understand that pain in one area may be linked to dysfunction in another part of the body. By addressing the root cause of the pain, rather than just the symptoms, we can provide more effective and long-lasting relief.

Our method incorporates different techniques such as Manual Therapy, Corrective/Therapeutic Exercise, and Pilates, to alleviate pain and enhance athletic performance. We strive to assist individuals in reducing or eliminating discomfort while also supporting athletes in optimizing their abilities.
