Understanding Hip & Groin Pain
What is hip and groin pain? Hip and groin pain refers to discomfort around the hip joint, pelvis, or upper thigh. Because of the close connection between the hip joint and surrounding muscles, pain is often felt in both the hip and groin area. It may come on suddenly after an injury or gradually due to long-term strain originating from mechanical reasons or degeneration.
Common symptoms
- Stiffness in the hip or groin area
- Reduced mobility – difficulty walking, squatting, or rotating the leg
- Pain radiating into the thigh, buttock, or lower back
- Clicking, catching, or instability in the hip joint
Causes
- Arthritis and degeneration – wear and tear in the hip joint leading to stiffness and pain
- Labral tears and joint injuries – damage to the cartilage around the hip joint
- Sports injuries – strains from football, running, or high-impact sports
- Postural and biomechanical issues – poor movement patterns or imbalances that overload the hip
