How Clinical Cupping Works
-
01
Myofascial Decompression
Medical-grade silicone or glass cups create a localised vacuum that lifts and separates layers of fascia and muscle — reducing adhesions and internal scar tissue that restrict movement and cause pain.
-
02
Vasodilation & Tissue Repair
The suction triggers a controlled inflammatory response, drawing nutrient-rich blood to the area and promoting cellular repair — accelerating recovery from injury and reducing chronic tension.
-
03
Neural Modulation
The negative pressure helps desensitise overactive pain receptors, providing measurable relief for chronic musculoskeletal conditions where conventional manual therapy alone has proved insufficient.
Conditions Treated with Clinical Cupping
Lower Back Pain
Targeting hypertonicity in the lumbar paraspinal muscles to reduce pain, restore mobility and support long-term rehabilitation.
Lower back pain treatment →Shoulder & Neck Tension

Shoulder pain treatment →Sports Injuries
Managing scar tissue and restricted mobility in the hamstrings, quadriceps or calves following acute injury or overuse — integrated into your broader rehabilitation plan.
Knee & leg pain treatment →IT Band Syndrome
Decompressing the lateral leg fascia to improve knee and hip mechanics, reduce friction and restore pain-free movement during sport and exercise.
Knee pain treatment →Neck Pain & Headaches
Addressing cervical myofascial restriction that contributes to tension headaches and referred pain patterns — often combined with manual therapy for optimal outcomes.
Neck pain treatment →Post-Surgical Recovery
Improving tissue mobility around healed incision sites to prevent long-term stiffness and fibrosis — carefully timed within your post-operative rehabilitation programme.

Cupping Therapy — FAQs
What is clinical cupping therapy and how does it differ from relaxation cupping?
Clinical cupping — also called myofascial decompression — is a physiotherapy technique using medical-grade cups to create negative pressure on soft tissue. Unlike relaxation or spa cupping, our clinical approach is used exclusively as part of a physiotherapy rehabilitation plan, following a formal assessment and diagnosis. It is not offered for relaxation purposes.
Is dry cupping therapy painful?
Most patients experience a pulling or stretching sensation rather than pain. The degree of suction is carefully controlled by your physiotherapist throughout the session. Any discomfort typically resolves within minutes of the cups being removed.
Will cupping leave marks on my skin?
Cupping may leave temporary circular discolourations, known clinically as ecchymosis. These are not bruises — they are caused by metabolic waste being drawn to the surface for lymphatic drainage, not by blunt trauma. They typically fade within 3–7 days.
Do I need a physiotherapy assessment before cupping?
Yes, always. As an HCPC-registered clinic, we do not offer walk-in cupping sessions. Your first appointment includes a full clinical assessment to determine whether cupping is the most appropriate and safe intervention for your specific injury or condition.
Is clinical cupping the same as a massage?
No. Traditional massage uses positive pressure — pushing into the muscle. Cupping uses negative pressure — lifting and decompressing the tissue. This unique mechanical action is often more effective for deep-seated fascial restrictions that respond poorly to conventional manual therapy. It is classified as physiotherapy, not massage.
How many cupping sessions will I need?
This depends on your diagnosis, chronicity of symptoms and overall rehabilitation goals. Most patients see measurable improvement within 3–6 sessions. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic outcome timeline following your initial assessment.
Can cupping be combined with other physiotherapy treatments?
Yes — and it frequently is. Clinical cupping works particularly well alongside extracorporeal shockwave treatment, manual therapy and therapeutic exercise. Conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica and shoulder pain often benefit from a combined approach.
Clinical Governance & Regulatory Compliance
All cupping therapy at Optimove Clinic is provided as a component of a physiotherapy treatment plan by HCPC-registered Physiotherapists. Our services are exempt from "Special Treatment" licensing under the London Local Authorities Act 1991 because all interventions are administered by, or under the direct supervision of, a Chartered Physiotherapist, are incidental to the practice of physiotherapy, and are performed only following a formal clinical assessment and diagnosis. Treatment is documented within a clinical medical record in full compliance with CSP standards.
