Advanced Musculoskeletal Recovery

How deep tissue massage works at Optimove

This treatment targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to relieve persistent tightness, reduce stiffness and improve mobility. It may leave you feeling looser and moving more freely.

01

Slow, focused pressure

Your therapist builds pressure gradually and works slowly, so your muscles have time to respond. Treatment uses moderate to firm, sustained pressure with slow, deep strokes, friction, compression and targeted release techniques. Deep does not have to mean painful: pressure is adjusted to your tolerance and should not be excessively painful, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point.

02

Chosen for the area you need

Many clients ask for particular areas, such as the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back or hips. Your therapist will talk through where you feel tense and spend the time where it counts, rather than following a set routine.

03

The right massage for you

If you would prefer something gentler, our Swedish and relaxing massage may suit you better, and sports massage is tailored to training. For a specific, recurring problem, our physiotherapists also provide remedial massage. You can see every option on our massage treatments in Marylebone page.

Optimove Deep Tissue Massage

Your experience

What to expect at your massage appointment

01

Arrive and settle

Your therapist asks about the areas that feel tight, how you like pressure and your general health, including any medication and previous injuries. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the treatment area. You may be asked to remove some clothing, and towels are used for draping.

02

Your treatment

Pressure builds slowly. You may feel some tenderness in tight areas, but it should stay within what you can tolerate. Tell your therapist if it feels like too much.

03

Afterwards

Mild muscle soreness may occur for 24 to 48 hours. Gentle movement is encouraged, and you may want to reduce strenuous exercise on sore areas for a short time.

Who benefits

What relaxing massage can help with

It may help ease:

  • tension in the neck, shoulders and upper back, often from desk work
  • stiffness in the lower back and hips
  • tight, heavy legs from standing, walking or training
  • muscular tension that builds up when you are under pressure
  • areas that feel knotted and do not loosen up with stretching

Back pain can have many causes. The NHS back pain guide explains when to seek medical advice, including pain that does not improve after a few weeks. If you are unsure what is behind your pain, our physiotherapists can assess it, and our pages on lower back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain explain how we help.

Deep pressure is not right for everyone. Your therapist will ask about your health and medication before starting and may adapt the treatment or advise against it in some situations.

This treatment suits people who prefer firm pressure and want to work on muscular tension and stiffness. Many of our clients sit at a desk for most of the day in Marylebone, Fitzrovia or Mayfair. Others are on their feet all day, or train regularly and carry tension they cannot shake.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is deep tissue massage?

It is a massage that uses slow, firm pressure to work on the deeper layers of muscle. It is often chosen by people with muscular tension and stiffness who want a firmer treatment than a Swedish or relaxing massage.

How much does deep tissue massage cost in Marylebone?

At Optimove, a 45-minute session is £90 and a 60-minute session is £135. Courses of 6 or 12 sessions lower the price per session, for example £80.83 per session on a course of 12 × 45 minutes. Prices are inclusive and there is no membership. You can also get 50% off your first session.

Where can I find deep tissue massage near me in central London?

Optimove Clinic is at 33 Cavendish Square in Marylebone, 3 minutes' walk from Oxford Circus and 2 minutes' walk from Harley Street, with Bond Street station close by. Appointments are 1-to-1 and by booking.

Is deep tissue massage painful?

It can feel intense in tight areas, but it should not be unbearable. You can ask your therapist to ease off at any point, and pressure is built up gradually.

What is the difference between deep tissue and relaxing massage?

Relaxing massage uses lighter, flowing pressure to help you unwind. Deep tissue uses slower, firmer pressure aimed at muscular tension. If you are not sure which you want, your therapist can help you choose.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Mild soreness can last 24 to 48 hours, similar to the day after exercise. Gentle movement is encouraged, and you may want to ease off strenuous exercise on sore areas for a short time.
