Understanding Headaches and Migraines
What is the Difference Between a Headache and a Migraine?
- Headaches usually cause mild to moderate pain or pressure around the forehead, temples, or back of the neck.
- Migraines are a neurological condition causing more intense pain, often accompanied by nausea, light and sound sensitivity, and sometimes visual disturbances (aura).
Common Symptoms
- Pain – dull, throbbing, or sharp, often on one or both sides of the head
- Light and sound sensitivity
- Nausea or vomiting
- Reduced concentration and fatigue
Causes
- Tension and stress – one of the leading triggers of chronic headaches
- Neck and posture-related issues – muscle tightness or poor ergonomics can create referred pain. For more specialised care, see our neck pain treatment page.
- Hormonal and lifestyle factors – such as sleep disruption, diet, or dehydration
- Neurological causes – including migraine disorders with genetic links
