Advanced Musculoskeletal Recovery

How sports massage works at Optimove

This treatment uses focused soft tissue techniques to ease muscle tightness, support recovery between sessions and help you keep moving well. It can be part of a regular training routine or a targeted response to a niggle that will not go away.

01

Built around your training

Your therapist starts by asking about your sport, your weekly training, any recent changes in load and the areas that feel tight or sore. Treatment uses moderate to firm pressure, with kneading, compression, friction, stretching and targeted muscle release techniques. Pressure is adjusted to your needs throughout, so you stay in control.

02

Part of a wider plan

If your therapist thinks you would benefit from an assessment, rehabilitation or strength work, they can point you to our physiotherapists, our personal trainers or our Performance Enhancement programme, all in the same Marylebone clinic. You can also see all of our massage treatments in Marylebone.

Optimove Sports Massage

Your experience

What to expect at your appointment

01

A short conversation

You will talk through your sport, your training, any past injuries and your general health. Wear comfortable clothing. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to remove some clothing, and towels are used for draping.

02

Your treatment

The massage can feel firm, and some areas may feel tender, but it should never feel unbearable. Tell your therapist at any point if you would like the pressure changed.

03

Afterwards

Drink water as normal and keep moving gently. If the treated muscles feel sore, avoid strenuous exercise on them for a day or two. Mild tenderness can last 24 to 48 hours.

Who benefits

What sports massage can help with

It may help ease:

  • tightness in the calves, hamstrings, quads and glutes after running or cycling
  • tension in the shoulders, upper back and neck from lifting, swimming or racket sports
  • muscle soreness and fatigue after heavy training
  • overuse niggles that build up over a season
  • stiffness that makes warming up harder than it should be
  • tightness from long hours at a desk on top of training

If you want firmer work on muscular tension, see our deep tissue massage page. For a calmer session, our Swedish and relaxing massage is another option. If discomfort keeps coming back, our physiotherapists also provide remedial massage.

Massage is not a diagnosis. After a new sprain or strain, NHS advice is to avoid massage for the first couple of days. Sudden or severe pain, swelling, or numbness and tingling should be checked by a clinician first, and our physiotherapists can assess and treat sports injuries.

You do not have to compete to benefit. Runners building towards a race, cyclists, gym-goers, swimmers, people who play team or racket sports and weekend walkers all book with us. Many clients train around Marylebone, Fitzrovia and Mayfair and fit sessions in before or after work.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is sports massage?

It is a form of massage that uses firm, focused techniques on the muscles used in training and sport. It is used to ease tightness, support recovery and keep you moving well. You do not have to be an athlete to have one.

How much does sports massage cost in Marylebone?

At Optimove, a 45-minute session is £90 and a 60-minute session is £135. Courses of 6 or 12 sessions lower the price per session, for example £80.83 per session on a course of 12 × 45 minutes. Prices are inclusive and there is no membership. You can also get 50% off your first session.

Where can I find sports massage near me in central London?

Optimove Clinic is at 33 Cavendish Square in Marylebone, 3 minutes' walk from Oxford Circus and 2 minutes' walk from Harley Street, with Bond Street station close by. Appointments are 1-to-1 and by booking.

Does it hurt?

This type of massage is usually firmer than a lighter massage, and some areas may feel tender, but it should not feel unbearable. Your therapist adjusts pressure as you go, so tell them if you would like it lighter or firmer.

What is the difference between sports massage and deep tissue massage?

Sports massage is tailored to the demands of training and sport. Deep tissue massage is defined by slow, firm pressure on muscular tension and can suit anyone who prefers deeper work. The techniques overlap, and your therapist will choose what suits you.

Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral or a consultation first, and you can book a session straight away.
