Recover Faster & Stronger.

Sciatica is a condition characterised by pain that usually originates in the lower back and radiates down the leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, becomes compressed or irritated. This compression or irritation can result in varying degrees of pain, numbness, and weakness. It can affect the lower back, buttocks, legs, and feet.

It is estimated that approximately 40% of people will experience sciatica at some point in their lives.

What Causes Lower Back Pain in Females

What causes Sciatica

The most common cause of sciatica is compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Several conditions can lead to sciatica.

One of the most common causes of sciatica is a herniated or bulging disc in the spine. When a disc in the spine ruptures or protrudes, it can put pressure on the adjacent nerve roots, including the sciatic nerve.

This condition involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, including the sciatic nerve.

As discs in the spine naturally degenerate with age, they may lose their cushioning effect, causing increased pressure on the nerves, including the sciatic nerve.

This occurs when a vertebra slips forward over the vertebra below it, causing compression of the nerves, including the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve may run through the piriformis muscle in the buttocks. If the muscle spasms or becomes tight, it can compress the sciatic nerve, leading to pain. It is worth to mention that only 10% of the population have their sciatic nerve running through the piriformis muscle. The other 90% involves the nerve running safely under this muscle.

Trauma to the lower back, such as a fall or car accident, can cause compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

Rarely, tumours or infections within the spine or pelvis can compress the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica.

In some cases, the growing uterus during pregnancy can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica.

How we treat Sciatica

Treatment for sciatica will depend on the underlying cause of the condition. MSK Therapy is one of the most popular and effective non-invasive options for treating sciatica.

Typically our interventions for sciatica may include:

Corrective Interventions that will help to re-align the body’s movement and take excess pressures off all relevant structures, including the impinged nerve. Some examples of corrective interventions we carry out are:

  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Joint Mobilisations
  • Corrective Exercise

Special Orthopaedic Interventions that will instantly reduce the pressure on the impinged nerve. Some examples of Special Orthopaedic Interventions are:

  • Spinal traction / Spinal decompression
  • Disc bulge exercises
  • Spinal stenosis exercises
  • Degenerative disc disease exercises

MSK Physical Therapy to boost the body’s natural healing power by promoting nutrient reach blood to the affected areas and by improving the body’s Functionality (Balance, Strength, Flexibility and Coordination). This is achieved with the use of Therapeutic Exercises.

Life style advice. There are activities that could make your sciatica symptoms worse and prevent healing, and some other activities that could help you recover. We will go through your daily routine and provide tailored advice on how you could modify the different activities, finding a golden mean between practicality and best possible outcomes.

At Optimove Clinic we look at the whole picture and because we use different modalities to address the issue and not just one modality or just a method, we have all of the tools to help you.

At Optimove Clinic, we take a different approach compared to other clinics. While they tend to “chase the pain” by focusing solely on treating the actively painful area, we take a holistic approach to pain management. We understand that pain in one area may be linked to dysfunction in another part of the body. By addressing the root cause of the pain, rather than just the symptoms, we can provide more effective and long-lasting relief.

At our clinic in Marylebone, our team of Advanced therapists use a variety of non-invasive treatment techniques to help our patients with sciatica. Whether you’re dealing with acute or chronic sciatica, we can provide the care and support you need to get back to living pain-free.
